Why do so many Americans not see the difference between totalitarian socialism and social democracy?

We used to live in a social democracy. All the thing you listed were in place. America being a free country allowed people to have differing opinions. Now we are headed down the road to total government control of our lives. What's coming is fascism or communism. Both models have failed in real world applications.
