What's a good seam allowance for a jean patchwork quilt?

I prefer 1/2" the 1" just seems to flop from side to side and kind of spoil the look. I would still back it with an old sheet or one of those cheap blankets like the ones you can get at Wal-Mart. It will help it to last longer.
