Trying to get new apartment?

I'm trying to get a new apartment but about two years ago I had moved in with a shady character and they stiffed me for the bill so it's still on my credit report. Long story short I have called the company to try and pay at least my half of the bill but they still will not remove it basically they want the whole thing or nothing. I refused to pay all of it because the other persons name is on the lease also. Anyway I just wondered if this will affect my new place and I do not have a co signer that could help. Thanks
