What's the deal with those online survey sites that claim to give you all these rewards and prizes. Scams?

I'm constantly getting invitations to win this or that "if I sign up to take online surveys". Sometimes they are tempting, but I'm very wary of them as I am with anything guaranteeing something "free". Anyone joined these and know what they entail? Thanks!
