Was the American army in the Lebanese Civil War?

I know a man who claims he was in the American army and fought in the Lebanese Civil War. He says he fought in Lebanon and was hurt during an explosion. My uncle told me that the American army never physically fought but were involved by other means. Does anyone know the true details? Thanks.
